During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Dutch filmmaker Joris Ivens resigned from his position and made a film called ‘Indonesia Calling’ which documented the blockades organized by Indonesian, Indian, Chinese, and Australian trade unions against Dutch shipping in Australia in defense of the newly declared Republic of Indonesia. This film had a significant impact on Australia’s relationship with Indonesia, as well as the development of independent documentary filmmaking in Australia.
