The famous Chinese scroll painting depicts Emperor Kangxi’s second tour of his southern empire in 1689, created by Wang Hui before Western perspective was incorporated into Chinese art. Hockney compares it to a later scroll depicting Qianlong Emperor’s tour, painted with a more fluid spatial depiction by Xu Yang and assistants.
