The plot follows the memories of Karel Bursík, a child who grew up in a poor family in Prague – Zizkov. His father, a shoe-maker, struggles to provide for his family and eventually throws his daughter out of the house due to her relationship with a married man. The story also touches on the competition between shoe companies Bata and Baťa.
