A Swiss minister named Jean takes in a blind and disabled orphan, Gertrude, who he raises alongside his own children. Over time, Jean falls in love with Gertrude, but his wife and son are aware of his true feelings. After Gertrude regains her sight and sees Jean’s true character, she decides to end her life.
