Movie Plot:

John Winger convinces his friend Russell to enlist in the army with him, but they struggle as misfits in basic training. When their platoon is assigned a mission in Italy, John and Russell take an unauthorized trip to visit friends in Germany, leading to their entire platoon getting stuck behind enemy lines and having to rely on their own abilities to survive.
