Plot for the movie:

A newly graduated engineer, Hans Castorp, arrives at a Swiss sanatorium to visit his sick cousin. Despite initially planning to stay for three weeks, he becomes drawn into the morbid atmosphere of the place and ends up staying for seven years. During this time, he becomes embroiled in philosophical debates and falls in love, only to eventually be discharged and thrust into the horrors of World War I.
